Dojo of the Golden Koi
History:
Yogo Sakon, born Soshi Sakon, was one of the many spirits who came back through Oblivion's Gate. He wasn't really remarkable, but his loyalty was unquesitionable. Then, one day after Beiden's Pass fell, he approached Yojiro and asked him if he would be allowed to start a dojo. Yojiro was surprized that a man like Sakon would ask for such a ridiculous request and his advisors simply laughed. The next day, the doors opened on the Dojo of the Golden Koi.
Tradition:
While most dojos seek out the best and brightest potential students, the Golden Koi seeks out the worst. Often, they take failures from other dojos. Sakon's simple belief that earned him this dojo is this. Out of the mud, rises some the greatest men. All Scorpion basic Schools are taught here. Though the senseis tends to teach those with no talent, the ninja Schools (Shinobi, Sabotuer, and Butei) because it amused Sakon to make it so and it's been continued since.
Since the name is Golden Koi, koi ponds are everywhere and it is the number one source on information on koi in the entire Empire. Not that anyone cares. Students are encouraged to find something to enjoy and make it their own. Koi is a popular one, but no means the only one.
Love is something that is also encouraged as long as it is in the Clan. Because if you love someone, you will die for them. It works. And since the only people the students see each other, most of them fall in love with their fellow students. Another point. If a student falls in love with someone outside the Clan, they are to bring them to the Clan. A spouse deserves to be in the best Clan there is afterall. And if they wish for you to betray the Clan, where a failure can earn some respect, then they are not worthy of you and are to be put to death. This logic tends to work. And the once or twice in the dojo's history it hasn't, the student has "died heroically in the line of duty." The students know there can be no failure.
Training:
Training depends on what the student is going to be, but there is some focus on each of the big four (fighting, talking, sneaking, and religion). The main reason that for the first 3 are how to avoid it if it is not the student's fortay and religion is because Sakon believed everyone should know what the afterlife brings. The students lose all contact with the outside world and suffer a long, hard, brutdal training. When the students give up (most of them do, otherwise they would be in another dojo), they are told they have no choice to but to go on. And they do. One other notable thing the students face. They know they are expendable. The "ninja" know that they are even more distractions that those who run the Gauntlet and are likely to die on their first mission a failure and forgotten. The Courtiers know that they are likely to be used as some political plot as their destruction is meaningless. The bushi know they will be the ones sacrificed to tire out the enemy for the better troops. The shungeja....they prefer not to imagine the things they may have to endure. Each student accepts this. For they also know that in the worst situations lies the greastest oppruntunities and no member of the Golden Koi has ever failed ( mission fail because of someone else yes, died horrifically yes (especially this), but never fail).
As mentioned, both bushi and Shugenja are trained here, some Dragon techniques are adopted here for training the two together. Though it has yet to produce the effects that Dragons seem to gain (ie their Techs), but it has allowed both bushi and Shugenja to learn to together and have a little understanding of what the oter is capable of.
On a miscelanious note: This dojo has close ties to the Dark Sword of Bitter Lies. Most students here look on them as if they were big brothers (the for their part Dark Sword od Bitter Lies students are too happy to play the part).
Sensei:
The sensei, despite the harsh training regime, are some of the nicest in Rokugan. They are patient to the extreme and understanding of the student's failures. There is no specific selection of the sensei here, only those who have those talents (some are not even Scorpions, but swear fealty after becoming a sensei). The Head sensei is often chosen by his predessor or, if the predessor dies without naming a successor, the remaining sensei talk about it and decide among themselves. Scorpion with the authority outside of the dojo, realize the dojo's nature is too delicate for them to mess with. Another strange practice, is the Head sensei always swears fealty to the Yogo, as the dojo opened on Sakon's wedding day.
The current Head Sensei is a man named Yogo Seiru (Ronin Shuggie Insight 3, though well versed in both Crane and Soshi philosphies), the first Shugenja head sensei ever. He wasn't born a Scorpion, but a Crane. His father lost favor and was eventually outsed as a Ronin. He trained his son in the peaceful Asahina ways. The son in turn, as a Ronin, did much of nothing. He happyily wondered around helping the peasants and teahcing children. One day a Scorpion child in the guise of a peasant (for his own training as a Butei) came and watched his lessons and pretended not to understand them. Seiru tried many things and never lost his pateince. The next day he was invited to teach at the Dojo of the Golden Koi. Intrigued, he accepted and found it to be rewarding, not only in fealty and a wife (a former student of the Golden Koi who's best use was to bring him into the Clan) but in the joy he gets in teaching the children. When the previous Master, Yogo Sakura, died there was no question of who would take her place.
Notable Students:
There are no notable students as that contradicts the principles the dojo was founded on.
Training Benefit:
All Honor tests concerning loyalty succeed automatically.
They are Scorpions and it i loyalty that allows the failures to become heroes, because without loyalty the greastest heroes are failures. They are Scorpions, they know this.
Social Benefit:
When convincing someone they're telling the truth or convincing them they are stupid, they gain a Free Raise. When trying to convince people of something else they gain +5 TN.
This does not work on people of the same Dojo or someone who would know of the dojo's secret reputation for success despite death of most of the successful students. A Scorpion Clan Lore TN 25 (10 for Dark Sword of Bitter Lies students/graduates) would take care of this permantely (note this loses the drawbak too). The roll my only be made when the dojo is first known.
