Tsangusuri

The delicate art of the Tsangusuri is a technique created a long time ago by the founders of the Asahina family. For centuries the Asahina have been the unrivaled masters of such magical trinkets, delighting in their intricate craftsmanship. The Tsangusuri are a powerfull mix of the art of astronomy, the mastery of the Kakita artisans and the delicate magic of the Asahina.
The Tsangusuri are delicate and limited little magicals items, a technique that seems to be an inheritance of the first Crane clan shugenjas and then magnified by the knowledge of Isawa Asahina. The school of Tsangusuri Daigaku in Prosperous plain city is the main place for the creation of such items.

The process of creating a Tsangusuri is pretty simple on the paper. But creating a tsangusuri is a lenghty process. It requires a serie of components listed under the name of the item, and all of them need a good quality item to enchant. There are two types of components : the required ones, and the secondary ones. The secondary ones gives one free raise for each you have. Once you have the component, you need an intelligence + divination (astrology) TN 15 to found the perfect time for enchanting the item. When the time arrives, the shugenja must prepare everything required and makes a fire + spellcraft (tsangusuri) roll TN 20 during a one hour ritual. The shugenja must also make offerings to the kami that are going to be binded in the item.

General rules of creating a Tsangusuri :

General requirments for a one use small fetish :
- The hour and the day corresponding to the astronomy check.
- Good quality item corresponding to the power
- 1 koku of ceremonials items (incense, sake … that will be used).
- Casting an invocation spell of the appropriate element.
- One hour in a meditative place.

General requirments for a two uses or a two powers small fetish :
- A person being born under the same constellation and hour as the one needed for the item
- The person that will use the item, making the item usefull only for her.
- Being at least Asahina shugenja rank 2
- 2 raises on the Tsansuguri skill check.
- Spellcraft (Tsangusuri) 4
- The requirments of a one use small fetish.
- The ritual will take 3 hours.

General requirments for a permanent one power fetish :
- Being at least Asahina shugenja rank 4
- 4 raises on the Tsansuguri skill check.
- Spellcraft (Tsangusuri) 6
- a person being born under the same constellation and hour as the one needed for the item
- A place linked to the element of the item, that can be found with an intelligence / divination (astrology) check TN 20
- The requirments of a two uses small fetish.
- The ritual will take 8 hours.

General free raises for the creation of a Tsangusuri (those bonus are given only if they aren’t in the requirments) :
- a person being born under the same constellation and hour as the one needed for the item
- A place linked to the element of the item, that can be found with an intelligence / divination (astrology) check TN 20
- Having a person of the same clan and family as the peoples that will use the fetish.
- An animal corresponding to the one of the period. A second raise is given if you the have three differents (month, day, hour), but only one raise is given if two. See page 41-42 of the 3rd edition rulebook for informations about time in Rokugan.

Examples of Tsangusuri :

Incense of concentration :
Type : one use small fetish
Astrological time : hour of the dragon, day of the rooster. Free raise if done during the month of the Tortoise.
Element : fire
Item : Phoenix clan wood incense.
Effect : this block of incense must burn fully during 15 minutes, during this time the user must makes a normal meditation roll. If sucessfull he restores all his void points.

Jade amulet :
Type : two powers one use small fetish
Astrological time : hour of the boar, day of the Hare. Free raise if done during the month of the Hare or the Boar.
Element : earth
Item : a jade amulet than can be formed into any shape that can be worn as a necklace
Effect : the amulet provides a 2k2 bonus to any roll to resist becoming tainted. Alternatively, the amulet can be used to ward off the taint if the wearer is in the Shadowlands. The amulet wards of the taint for 2 weeks. After either of these uses, the amulet turn soft and black, becoming useless.

Brooch of plenitude :
Type : one use small fetish
Astrological time : hour of the goat, day of the goat. Free raise if done during the month of the goat.
Element : earth
Item : a small brooch
Effect : the character can spend a day without eating.

Make-up kit :
Type : one power permanent fetish
Astrological time : hour of the serpent, day of the monkey. Free raise if done during the month of the goat.
Element : air
Item : make-up kit, different flowers
Effect : one free raise for acting rolls.
Bone key
Type : one use small fetsih
Astrological time : hour of the tiger, day of the rooster. Free raise if done during the month of the tiger or the rooster.
Element : water
Item : a small bone key
Effect : this key will open any door, but will break after use. Can overcome magicals protection (makes an opposed rolls between the insight rank of the caster of the magical protections and the one of the creator of the key)

Crane’s feather
Type : one use small fetish
Astrological time : hour of the goat, day of the monkey. Free raise during the month of the rat or Goat.
Element : air
Item : crane’s feathers
Effect : once activated, the character will see his weight being divided by 10. Any wounds suffered during this time will be doubled. This fetish burns after 1 hour.

Acorn of vision
Type : two powers one use small fetish
Astrological time : hour of the dragon, day of the tiger. Free raise during the month of the Dragon or tiger.
Element : water
Item : an acorn and a pool of pure water
Effect : after meditating on a particular personn, the character eats the acorn and fall unconscious for one hour. He then gets visions concerning his target. This acorn can also be used to improve divination spells.

Tortoise’s shell
Type : two uses small fetish
Astrological time : hour of the horse, day of the boar. Free raise during the month of the tortoise.
Element : earth
Item : a small tortoise’s shell
Effect : once activated, the shell gives for 5 rounds a + 25 TN against ranged attacks. Can be activated 2 times.

Cereals white sheaf
Type : one use small fetish
Astrological time : hour of the Hare, day of the rat. Free raise during the month of the Dog.
Element : water
Item : many sheaf of cereals, a small Netsuke to Jizo.
Effect : this tsangusuri can only be activated by a shugenja, who must take one action to pray as he gives the sheaf to eat to the target. The target heals 2 dice of wounds (dice don’t explode).

Black fan :
Type : two powers one use small fetish
Astrological time : hour of the rooster, day of the ox. Free raise during the month of the rooster or the month of the Ox.
Element : fire
Item : a black fan.
Effect : used during social relation, this fan create some intimidation effect among courtiers. Other courtiers suffer of a fear 3 effect from the wearer for 5 turns.

Family token :
Type : two powers one use small fetish
Astrological time : hour of the dog, day of the horse. Free raise during the month of the dog or the month of the horse.
Element : earth
Item : a small Netsuke with a carving of a paysage
Effect : creating this tsangusuri requires a member of the family that will be linked to the token to be present. The bearer, as long he is of the linked family, have the possibility to activate the fetish two times to earn « way of the land : his family provinces » for a day.

Netsuke of past times :
Type : one use two powers small fetish
Astrological time : hour of the rat, day of the monkey. Free raise during the month of the dragon.
Element : air
Item : a small Netsuke.
Effect : the creator can put a kiho he knows in the Netsuke. The bearer if he is monk or shugenja can break the Netsuke to cast the kiho as if he was knowing it.

Shakuachi of quiet winds
Type : two uses small fetish
Astrological time : hour of the goat, day of the monkey. Free raise during the month of the serpent.
Element : air
Item : a shakuachi
Effect : two times, the bearer (who must makes a performance : music TN 15) can play for a minute and gives one person a free raise for any general spell.

Tengoku’s essence
Type : two powers one use small fetish
Astrological time : hour of the Hare or the Dragon, day of the Hare or the dragon. Free raise during the months of the Hare or the Dragon.
Element : fire
Item : a small netsuke of 5 colors.
Effect : by offering this netsuke during the casting of an elemental spell, it grants a free raise.

Sun kites
Type : one use small fetish
Astrological time : hour of the dog, day of the tiger. Free raise during the month of the dog.
Element : air
Item : a kite
Effect : this kite must fly during ten minutes, before granting the user 2 free raises to use on any rolls involving his movement during the next week. The raises can be used only once and are lost at the end of the week.

Shorihotsu’s blessing
Type : two uses small fetish
Astrological time : hour of the rat, day of the rat. Free raise during the month of the tiger.
Element : air
Item : a small stone polished and carved as an amulet.
Effect : the fetish can be used two times before breaking up. The bearer can spend a void point to gives a free raise to the caster of a spell targeting him and only him. The bearer can’t be shugenja or monk.
