Shadow points, jade, crystal and obsidian
Rules for the 3rd edition

Jade :
Jade is a crystal mineral of green color. It’s the perfect attunement of the 5 elements in the mortal world, giving him a lot of power against beings who carry the taint of another spirit-realm. It’s a precious substance that protect against the taint, and expect for a possible way found by the Tamori to make some by calling earth and fire spirits, the only way to have some is to dig it. Jade is too weak to make weapons.
Jade powder : using some grease to stick it on a weapon, it grant it the jade abilities. It took one round to apply it. The weapon is considered jade and do full damage on the first attack. At the second attack it does half damage, the third attack the weapon is normal.
Jade petals tea : this special tea is grown only in a special Osano-wo monastery of the Crab lands, and all the supplies and sell are monitored by the Tsukai-sagasu Kuni. One dose of this tea make shadowland powers became inactive during 1 to 10 rounds, and the difformities created by the taint slowly became less visible with regular use of the tea.

Crystal :
Their is two types of crystal in Rokugan, the common crystal for the peasants who is in fact just glass, a technique the Unicorn brought back from the Burning sands, and the mystical crystal who are the tears of Lady Sun who didn’t fusion with the blood of Lord Moon. The common crystal have no special power, despite being really expensive. The true crystal is really powerfull as he can wound many types of spirits and onis, but it’s too weak to make weapons without the use of magic.

Power of the crystal :
- Crystal have a strength rating of 1 to 5, powerfull crystal being the rarest.
- Crystal weapons ignore carapace ratings on Shadowland and Shadow-tainted creatures.
- Shadowland creatures can’t get closer of to (crystal strength) feet without making a willpower roll TN (strength of the crystal) X 10 of their own volition.
- Light going through a crystal deal Xk1 damage to Shadowland creatures and Xk(X-1) to Shadow-tainted beings where X is the strength of the crystal. The light must be targeting the creature during the whole round, and focused on it.
- Shadow-tainted creatures can’t pass through crystal.
- Massive amount of light passing through a crystal can dispell a Shadow manifestation and illusion if most of its mass was affected. Shadow-tainted creatures in such position suffer 1die of wound per round.
- Shadow-tainted creatures touching a crystal have their powers cancelled until the contact is broke, and all wound created by a crystal is extremly painfull making them cry out in pain.

Different types of crystal
- Kuni crystal : enchanted by a Kuni ritual, this crystal became as solid as steel, keep his original strength, increase damage against shadowlands creatures by 2k2. He also add strength of the crystal dice for resistance rolls against the Shadowland taint (not cumulative with other Kuni crystal). Any spells requiring a crystal can use this crystal as his strength was increased by 2. Kuni crystal glow a white light when a shadowland creature get within 30 feet of it. The TN for shadowlands creatures to get close to the bearer is increased by 5. The crystal have all normal crystal abilities.

- Ashalan crystal, also named cristeel. Technique created by the Ashalan hundreds of years ago to fight the Jinns, they create from the sands of the great desert really solid crystal weapons they use. All those items are at least of good quality, and for weapons they give a +1k0 bonus to both attack and damage rolls. They are really solid and difficult to break, and work otherwise like normal crystal. A crysteel katana is a 5 poinths sacred weapon advantage available only to Scorpions.

- Naga crystal : using enchantements and pearls, nagas created weapons for their war against the foul. Naga crystal can be used as jade and crystal, depending wich one is the most efficient.

Obsidian :
The crystal knows as obsidian is a black crystal that reflect the light. Their is two types of obsidian, the first one being the fully corrupted jade. Jade, when exposed to the shadowland taint, decay and became a black oily crystal who is named by commoners Obsidian. The true obsidian is the blood of Lord Moon that didn’t fusion with the tears of Lady Sun. Obsidian can be turned into powder like jade and used to goes past invulnerability like it was jade. But no one would humiliate a daisho doing like this. More solid that crystal and jade, it can be used to shape primitive weapon.
In itself, obsidian is a bad omen but doesn’t bear the stigma of the Shadowland. The problem is that 3 pieces on 10 are cursed by the madness of Lord Moon. The first time the cursed obsidian is put in contact with Shadowland-tainted blood, the bearer must make a willpower TN 5 roll. Every full moon, he makes another one with a cumulative + 5TN. If failed, the bearer enter a blind fury and try to kill everyone in sight. If the bearer throw away the obsidian, the TN lower by 5 every full moon until it reach 0. If 5 consecutives rolls are failed, the madness became permanent.
Obsidian tea : made of tea with powder of corrupted jade, it has the same effects as the Jade petals tea, but also every effects targeting Shadowland taint target you as your rank was one lower. The cost is every drink give you one shadowlan taint point.
Blacksteel : blacksteel is forged by the Lost. It’s a poor quality steel reinforced with common obsidian during the forging process. Forging blacksteel is a crime, and it’s difficult to identify since it’s carry no taint. Blacksteel weapons add once 5 to their damage roll if a 10’ have been rerolled on the damage roll. Non-lost carrying a blacksteel weapon suffer a + 5 penalty to all stamina, willpower and earth roll, and an additionnal + 5 if they have used it regulary during the week. Penalties fade after a week without blacksteel. Blacksteel armor carries the same penalties but have no special abilities.

Shadow points :
The Lying Darkness taint is know as the Shadow points. They work differently from the Shadowland taint, insuffling in the target a small part of Nothing who change their nature. The physical manifestation of the taint is the slow loss of facial features, and even human form, and the mental manifestation is the lost of memories, then of identity until being just living extension of the Shadow.
Resist attempt rolls to avoid getting a shadow point are Void TN 10 + 2 for each previous attempt roll, failed or not. TN + 10 between the 27 days of darkness and the end of the war against the Shadow. Rules about when characters must make such a roll are written below.

- Characters with more Shadow points than Void are immediatly turned into Shadow-spawns.
- Rolls to resist against the Shadow when asleep are at + 10 TN. If failed, they rarely get a shadow point but suffer from a fear effect, preventing them to use any Void during the next day.
- Attacks in dreams : if someone die during a Shadow-attacked dream, he must make a Void roll TN 5 after it or die from the nightmare, bruising himself, having torn eyes, white hair…
- Influence through dreams : if someone is consummed with excessive fear, desire or regret, the Shadow can approach him if he is not wearing crystal. The darkness will manifest and will try to make them indulge to his darkest impulse. If he does, he makes a resist attempt.
- Curiosity : the first time a character is trying to learn anything about the Lying Darkness (that he knows what is it or not is irrelevant) without bearing crystal, he makes a resist attempt.
- Proximity to Darkness : certains places in the world are linked to the Lying Darkness like the Shadowlands to Jigoku (the white lands, Morikage Toshi or the monastery of the moon order of Bunrakuken). Character with a shadow-brand entering such place earn a shadow point. Other make a daily resist attempt roll if not carrying crystal.
- Bargaining : characters with a shadow point can be contacted by the Darkness and offered power. If they accept, they earn a shadow point.
- If the Shadow control somebody dear to you, your rolls to resist against the Shadow are at TN + 5.
- Possession technique : direct attack of the Shadow, Void TN 20 to resist, if failled one Shadow point. It’s really rarely done, and must have the presence of a really powerfull entity of the Shadow to be done, like Goju Adorai or the Shadow Dragon.
- Coercion : by torturing both physically and mentally a victim, the Goju can force her to accept a Shadow point.
- Influence technique : the character have ideas or heard voices suggesting him to do something. The GM roll shadow points dice against willpower of the character X 2 if the action is normal for the character, X 5 if it’s out of character, X 10 if it’s against what he believes in to force the character to do it.

If sucessfull, the target make a void roll against the Shadow’s attack roll result. If failed, the target suffer 3k3 of damage as he grew older, his name and experiences destroyed by the infusion of Nothing.

Kage-yakin (shadow brand) :
After Shosuro took the name and identity of Soshi, she teached the shugenja of the Scorpion clan the secret of the Kage-Yakin, infusing with a tatoo the power of the Nothing into the victim. It was a 5 points inheritance advantage for Scorpion clan characters, available only to Bayushi, Shosuro and rarely Soshi characters. During years, many characters granted the brand have been corrupted by the Shadow and turned into ninjas. After the war against the Shadow, the Scorpion banned the use of this ritual.
Each Shadow brand grant + 1k1 in dim light. 2 Kage-yakin give one Shadow point. The price is also that the part of Nothing in it slowly disconnect the character’s link to the Void and so the Void rank of the character is limited depending of the numbers of brand he has been granted.
1 Brand limit the Void rank at 7
2 Brands limit the Void rank at 5
3 Brands limit the Void rank at 3
4 Brands limit the Void rank at 2
5 Brands limit the Void rank at 1
